Bornheim, known as the “Merry Village” of Frankfurt, Germany, is a lively district and one of the trendiest hangouts in the city. Bornheim’s nickname comes from its sordid history, when the district was once a thriving red-light district. Even though the brothels are gone, Bornheim has retained its lively atmosphere, especially on Berger Strasse, the main street in the area. This cosmopolitan boulevard is lined with chic restaurants, trendy cafes and bars that cater to a youthful crowd. In Bornheim, visitors will find unique shopping experiences in the quirky boutiques that flank the streets.
- Head to Bornheim’s Uhrtürmchen Square on Wednesday and Saturday mornings for the farmer’s market, where you will find amazing produce as well as fresh baked goods made by Frankfurt’s pastry chefs.
- Stop at Zur Sonne, a traditional cider house located on Berger Strasse, to enjoy mugs of Frankfurt’s famous hard cider as you listen to live local music.
- Marvel at the modernist architecture of the Holy Cross Church, whose main steeple and austere white façade tower over Frankfurt.
Frankfurt, like the rest of Germany, has great public transportation; it’s no surprise, then, that Bornheim is well connected to Frankfurt’s city centre through a number of transportation means. There are three stops of the Frankfurt U-Bahn in Bornheim, the most centrally located being the Bornheim Mitte station. There are also several bus routes that go from the city centre to Berger Strasse. Frankfurt is a clean city and cycling is one of the most popular activities, so many people can be found riding bikes around Bornheim, which is connected to Frankfurt’s extensive network of bike paths.
