Heumarkt is a wonderful area of Cologne, and lies in the charming old town district. Its history goes all the way back to the Middle Ages, when it was an important hay market. The Square was quite beautiful in the early days, but later on, traffic requirements led to a reduction in the original area. Today, the area is a major public place where cultural events, concerts, festivals, the revived Christmas Market and carnival events take place. It is a popular destination for locals, tourists, and historians, as the area features many different activities and historical landmarks.
- Admire the central Equestrian Statue: The most distinctive feature of the Heumarkt in Cologne is the huge and impressive equestrian statue of King Frederick III of Prussia.
- Have fun at the Christmas Market: This age-old tradition has been revived in recent years, so that every Christmas, there is a traditional market with wooden booths selling sweets, toys and other items.
- Explore the Ruine St. Alban: Located near the square is this ruin of a parish church that is a grim reminder of the ravages of war Cologne has faced.
To arrive in Cologne, visitors can fly into the Konrad-Adenauer-Flughafen International Airport. Travellers can then get to Heumarkt by using public transportation. The Cologne Stadtbahn links different parts of the city through its rapid transit and light rail systems. Tourists near the Central Station should board bus number 134 for Heumarkt. Taxis are available, and visitors should use the local company called Taxi Ruf. Car rentals are also available in Cologne, but it is generally easier and faster to travel on public transportation. Once in the old town area, travellers can walk to the nearby attractions, including the market.
