Bremen General Information
As the venerable home of SV Werder Bremen, one of the most successful top flight football clubs in Germany, the fine city of Bremen resonates with sports fans the world over. While Bundesliga action at Weserstadion is a requisite activity for even passive fans of “The “Beautiful Game”, the heart of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen offers other untold points of interest to discover.
The metropolis of 2.5 million people has a remarkable history and as far back as the year 150, was reputable enough to have made it on Ptolemy’s radar. A millennium later, Bremen was a powerful, strategic city with impressive stone walls and a magnificent cathedral. Because of fire damage and subsequent facelifts, the Bremen Dom is certainly not the same Romanesque masterpiece it once was. The majestic monument still soars over the cityscape however and unfurls countless interior gems. Other bygone heritage landmarks in Bremen’s Altstadt (Old Town) include the fine Marktplatz (Market Square), exceptional Rathaus (Town Hall) and 11th century Liebfrauenkirche (Our Lady’s Church). Superb contemporary landmarks dot Bremen’s skyline too, from the visionary Universum Science Center to the Museum for Art and Cultural History, Kunsthalle Bremen to the Overseas Museum of Natural History and Ethnography. Time your Bremen visit to coincide with Musikfest in August and September and for the love of beer, take a tour of the iconic Beck’s Brewery.
