Zoological Gardens hotels
Berlin’s Zoological Gardens are one of the most visited attractions within the city and the zoo itself is actually the most visited zoo in the whole of Europe. It was the home of the famous Polar Bear, Knut, who from 2006 to 2011 drew many a curious visitor. The zoo was first opened in 1844 and is therefore Germany’s oldest zoo. Most of the Zoological Gardens were destroyed during the last days of World War Two when it was one of the last Nazi bastions against the invading Red Army. Today, over three million people a year visit the zoo.
- Take a photo in front of the famous Elephant Gate entrance built in 1899 and which survived the destruction of Berlin by the Soviet Red Army.
- Learn more about the varied animal life by visiting some of the different species that call the Zoological gardens home – over 1,500 species can be found.
- Take a trip to Berlin’s only aquarium, which is also on the Zoological Gardens grounds and houses a variety of water life.
The Zoological Gardens reside on Berlin’s Hardenbergplatz and are extremely easy to visit due to their connections on the city’s transport network. The zoo itself actually has its own station, which connects with the buses and subway as well as having a railway station. The station is reached by the subway lines U2 and U9 and the bus line SEV. Many people now find their way around the City by hiring a bicycle and while the city has plenty of traffic, it has well maintained cycle paths and routes spread out across the City.
