The area of Westend features many of Berlin’s most popular attractions and facilities. Even though the district was just formed in the early 2000s, the area has figured prominently in the city’s history. The former French general Napoleon used the area as a military camp and several of the buildings designed for the 1936 Summer Olympics are located within the Westend district. Several of the sightseeing stops in the area were established in the early 20th century and are still widely used today to give visitors insight into the complex history of the city.
- Take a walk up to the top of the Glockenturm des Olympiastadions, the Westend Olympic Stadium bell tower, to get a look at the greater Berlin skyline.
- Buy tickets to see a Hertha BSC home football game at the 76,000-seat Berlin Olympic Stadium, or reserve a set of concert tickets at the popular outdoor venue.
- Tour the Georg-Kolbe Museum, which is situated within the artist’s former home in Westend, to see some of his early sculpting works and sketches.
Both Tegel International Airport and Schonefeld Airport provide air service from cities across the country and the world. Visitors who arrive in Berlin can use the city’s expansive S-Bahn train system to get to the downtown area from either airport. To reach the Westend, travellers can take S-Bahn lines such as S46 and S75 to reach the neighbourhood. The underground subway, called the U-Bahn, also provides direct transportation to Westend through the U2 line, which connects at several area stations, including Olympia-Stadio and Kaiserdamm. Tourists who prefer to drive themselves can reach the neighbourhood by the A100 motorway.
