In the heart of bustling, historical Berlin is a little neighbourhood named Weissensee, nestled in the borough of Pankow. Named after the small lake called Weissensee, or White Lake, which is nearby, this district is known for its historical architecture and its beautiful parks. Visitors come to this peaceful part of town to stroll around and take a break from the noise of the city centre. This area rehosts popular music concerts at its cycling track in the summertime. Weissensee is also home to one of Europe’s largest Jewish cemeteries, where notable painters and publishers have been laid to rest.
- Visit Karow, once part of Weissensee, and then enjoy a walk in the Karower Teiche Nature Reserve of nearby.
- See the Heinersdorf water tower that was erected in 1910, part of a planned town hall that later served as a Flak tower and a listening station for the Red Army in Berlin.
- Check out an UNESCO World Heritage Site in Weissensee, Berlin, the Modernist Housing Estates known as the Wohnstadt.
Most tourists enter the capital city via the Tegal International Airport, located northwest of the city. This airport is a major hub for international carriers such as British Airways, Air France and United. The city is served by an InterCity and EuroCity train system offering connections between Berlin and other European cities. Buses and trains bring visitors from the airport to downtown Berlin. Be sure to view the route planner online to see the detailed maps and schedules you need to plan your journey. Travel to Weissensee is easy on S-Bahn Line 25 or U-Bahn Line 8 through Reinickendorf.
