Volksbuhne, also known as the “People’s Theatre” is a situated in the Mitte district in central Berlin, Germany. The theatre was constructed in 1914 based on a design by Oskar Kaufmann, a Hungarian-Jewish architect. The original goal was to provide social-realist plays that were cheap enough so the common worker could afford to see them. The Volksbuhne was largely destroyed during WWII and then rebuilt in the early 1950’s. Now the theatre is known as one of the best in all of Germany and regularly hosts provocative and experimental performances from some of the top writing talent in the land.
- Catch a reading by a Berlin poet or a lecture from a top intellectual at the Roter Salon, the reading stage of Volksbuhne that regularly hosts fascinating speeches and readings.
- Stay up to date with the latest in political theatre by watching a performance at the Großes Haus, the main stage at Volksbuhne that often features the most provocative talent from around Berlin.
- Take a guided tour of Volksbuhne and you can see the dressing rooms where the actors prepare for shows and even take a stroll across the stage.
Berlin is known for having some of the best public transportation in all of Europe, so it will be easy to get to Volksbuhne even if you do not have a car. Those taking the U-Bahn should get off at the Luxemburg-Platz station that is just a short walk away from the front entrance of Volksbuhne. You can also take the M8 Tram that has a stop nearby as well. In addition there are several bus routes that go near the theatre so you should have no problem getting there.
