Germany’s world-renowned Tempelhof was once considered Berlin’s major city airport before permanently closing its terminals several years ago. Since then this spacious and often breath-taking facility has been remodelled as a city park, in turn becoming one of Berlin’s most popular venues for ground-breaking entertainment events and fairs. Located just five minutes from the city centre, Tempelhof’s perimeter airfield now forms the bulk of an 11-kilometer-long running track. The facility’s main building, designed by Albert Speer, is now open for public tours as the largest Nazi-built structure on the planet. Additionally, neighboring Hasenheide Park is a favourite lounging location amongst locals and tourists hoping to kick back for family fun.
- Explore the running track surrounding Tempelhof airport and ending at Hasenheide Park with a bicycle or a pair of in-line skates.
- Visit Hasenheide Park for an afternoon full of mini-golf and barbequing while you listen to some of the city’s best musicians jam in this artistic centre.
- Enjoy the latest fair being held in Tempelhof Hangar, a tranquil and beatific getaway from Berlin’s hustle-bustle city streets.
Tegel Airport currently services Berlin’s international travellers though it will be closed in 2013 when the new Brandenburg Airport begins operations. Buses from Tegel run into the city centre frequently. From there, it’s easy to get to Tempelhof field on the U-Bahn by alighting at the Platz der Luftbrücke Station on the U6 line. Taxis are abundant in Berlin and, with the city centre lying within reasonable proximity to Tempelhof, they serve as visitor’s preferred method of transport. The park itself is perfect for exercise and outdoor amusement of all kinds, so bring a bicycle, some skates, or just a pair of comfortable walking shoes.
