Since the 1920's Schoeneberg has been the centre of gay life in Berlin. While the cabarets are long gone, they have been replaced by discos, bars, and other gathering places. This enclave gave inspiration to art and novel alike. The original book, which became the movie Cabaret, was based on Schoeneberg in its golden era before the Nazis came and shut it down. Of historic interest is that this is the place that John Kennedy visited and made his historic “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. There is no more exciting a spot in the city than this trendy, bohemian locale.
- Shop in the largest department store in all of continental Europe, KaDeWe, which is located in Schoeneberg and has nearly anything you might wish to buy.
- Visit the American Church in Berlin that is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and conducts services in English; the original building was constructed in 1763.
- See the amazing collection of Modern Art in the 18-metreGaleriefürZahlenwerte, which is only open once a month in Schoeneberg, Berlin.
Berlin has fantastic public transportation at a small cost. The S-Bahn is the above ground railway and the U-Bahn is the underground rail. There are also trams, buses, and ferries. The best part is that you can buy one ticket that allows you to transfer from one mode of transport to another. Taxis run all the time and are readily available and metered for your convenience. The only means of travel that is not recommended in this entire region is by driving, as the roads are not good. Better to take the public transportation, as it is so convenient.
