Since the reunification of Germany and relocation of the capital back to Berlin, the Berlin Parliament, also called the Bundestag, has become a popular tourist attraction. Officially known as the Reichstagsgebäude, the Berlin Parliament is a stately structure dating from 1894. The building encompasses a tremendous amount of history; it served as the seat of government for the Third Reich and now houses the government of the Federal Republic of Germany. Visiting the Berlin Parliament is truly taking a step back in time. Visitors can learn about the history of Germany, beginning with its roots of independence in 1848.
- Climb to the top of the Berlin Parliament’s Reichstag Dome through its winding passageway, a modernistic structure that affords great views of Berlin landmarks such as the Federal Chancellery and the city’s television towers.
- Don’t miss the spectacular main parliamentary room, featuring a large metal rendition of the federal German eagle and naturally lighted by the open Reichstag Dome on the ceiling.
- For a healthy dose of German history, visit the Berlin Parliament’s huge exhibition entitled “Milestones, Setbacks, Sidetracks.” Located across five floors, the exhibit traces the historical development of Germany’s parliamentary system.
Thanks to Berlin’s extensive public transportation system, the Berlin Parliament building is very easy to reach. The U Bahn rapid transit underground has two lines, the U2 and U6, which stop nearby. Both underground lines may be accessed from Berlin’s main train station. From the U2, get on at Stadmitte or Hausvogteipltatz. From the U6, get on at Stadmitte or Französische Straße. Bus lines that stop at the Reichstag include Französische Straße, 347 Jerusalemer Straße, 147 Werderscher Markt, and TXL Unter den Linden/Friedrichstrße. The Berlin Parliament building is approximately a five-minute walk from the famous Brandenburg Gate.
