Museumsinsel (“Museum Island”), is an island within the Spree River in Berlin, covered with museums. There are five, the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode Museum, and the Pergamon Museum, and you could spend most of the day in any one of them, so “taking your time” has a whole new meaning here. On weekends there are street musicians and street carts on the paths between them, making this a place brimming with nightlife and strange fun, and the only place you can say you “museum-hopped”. Museumsinsel is one of the great historical collections in Berlin, and well worth at least one stop on holiday.
- Visit the Greek and Mesopotamian collections at the Pergamon Museum and see the results of several archaeological digs.
- Stop and have a picnic lunch at the Lustgarten, (“Pleasure Garden”) and enjoy the restful fountains and green squares.
- Stand awestruck at the largest cathedral in Berlin – the protestant Berliner Dom.
You can get to Berlin in many ways: train, plain, or automobile. Once there, leave your car parked. Traffic may not be overwhelming, but public transportation is reliable and saves you the time and money of finding space and parking at Museumsinsel. You will want a day-pass to both the underground (U-Bahn) and aboveground (S-Bahn) transit systems, good for both zones A and B, which will get you all over central Berlin. Get off at the Fredrichstraße Station – only the U6 train goes directly to Museumsinsel, but many of the S-train lines go directly to the island.
