Martin Gropius Bau
The Martin Gropius Bau Museum of Contemporary Art sits directly across the street from the Abgeordneten Haus, which houses Berlin’s parliament. Designed by Martin Gropius, uncle of Bauhaus founder, Walter Gropius, it was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm I as the Royal Museum of Applied Arts. After graduating the Bauakademie, Gropius and classmate Heino Schmieden travelled at length in the Mediterranean. The museum became the fruit of their travels, an Italian Renaissance epic, with a quadratic ground floor, windows punctuated by exterior panels depicting German craftsmen at work, and seals of the German provinces at intervals along the interior atrium, with copious light. It has only recently been restored from its World War II damage and renamed the Martin Gropius Bau.
- Examine remnants of the Berlin Wall, a modern testament to the universal desire for democracy and freedom.
- Take in a major artist retrospective at the Martin Gropius Bau of Berlin. Frida Kahlo, Man Ray and Olafur Eliasson have been featured in past exhibitions. The Bau often presents four at once.
- Contemplate world peace while perusing Nazi documents at the Topography of Terror, adjacent to the Martin Gropius Bau.
Located in Berlin-Kreuzberg at Niederkirchnerstraße 7, the Martin Gropius Bau Museum of Contemporary Art is well-served by local rail stations. Simply take the U-Bahn Line 2 or S-Bahn Lines 1, 2 or 25 and hop off at Potsdamer Platz. Only 100 metres away from the Martin Gropius Bau, Potsdamer Platz (Potsdam Square) was once a 17th-century refuge for victims of religious persecution, and later the site of Germany’s first electric streetlights. Heavily damaged in World War II, the frantically busy square’s former business structures have now been replaced with beautiful glass towers.
