Located in the heart of the historic city of Berlin, Marienkirche is one of the city’s oldest standing religious structures whose medieval origins are evident still in the intricate granite engravings along the building’s one-of-a-kind exterior. Indeed, these footprints into the past have survived even torrential bomb raids during the Second World War, after which time the church was completely refinished. Located in a vast green space near the Alexanderplatz area of the city, Marienkirche was once surrounded by housing before it was devastated during wartime violence. Today the church, which is open every day, contains some of Germany’s best examples of Baroque art, particularly its frescoes spanning the breath-taking interior.
- Make your own mark on the Marienkirche building forever by adding a mosaic tile to a replica of their famous Totentanz “The Dance of Death” fresco.
- Tour the church’s world-renowned collection of Reformation art that runs daily, and show your support, with your contribution, for the continued regeneration of this historic German landmark.
- Enjoy the serenity of this sanctuary in Berlin amongst an otherwise inescapable bustling city.
Located conveniently on the Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse to the west of Alexanderplatz, Marienkirche is easily accessible from all parts of Berlin and the surrounding areas. The city’s efficient buses and trams run from the centre of Berlin to the church, and the Alexanderplatz train station is less than half a kilometre away from this historic destination. Indeed, many locals and holidaymakers alike maintain that the walk from the Alexanderplatz station to Marienkirche is ideal for seeing some of Berlin’s most important local sights. It’s worth noting, also, that the city’s taxis are numerous and affordable, and bike rentals are widely available throughout the city.
