James Simon Gallery
When it’s completed, the elegant and spacious halls of the James Simon Gallery will form the entrance to Berlin’s Museum Island. This facility will be a fitting and long-overdue tribute to an almost forgotten benefactor of the arts, whose jaw-dropping generosity has gifted Germany with an antiquities collection larger than that of many first world nations, as this structure will contain 200,000 pieces in total. And since many of these artefacts have been hidden from the public for political reasons, this facility represents an opportunity to catch a glance of ancient treasures just as grand as those found in fairy tales, items made all the more impressive by their unfamiliarity.
- See the James Simon Gallery’s beautiful collection of ancient Egyptian treasures whilst in Berlin, including the yew-wood bust of the Egyptian queen Tiya, who was Akenaten’s mum.
- Admire the facility’s 6th B.C.E., abylonian mosaic, with its stylish red lion sitting before a turquoise background, as well as the solemn, 26th century B.C.E bronze bullhead.
- Enjoy the collection of marble and wooden treasures from the silk road that Simon gifted to the Berlin museums, including the delicate, 7th century carving of the eleven-headed god, Avilokiteshvara.
When completed, the James Simon Gallery will sit between the Neues Museum and Kupfergraben arm of Berlin’s Museum Island. To access Museum Island, take trams 12, M1, M4, M5, or M6, and get off at Am Kupfergrabin or Monbijouplatz. If you take the metro, take S5, S7 to Hackescher Markt. You can also use the subway, taking the U line to Gipsstrasse. Bus lines N2, N40, N42, and N8 will also take you quite close to this destination—just get off at Hackescher Markt. The Berlin Route Planner will help you plan your journey.
