As part of the East Central Berlin area, Friedrichshain enjoys a reputation for being hip and alternative with its abundance of young, artsy residents and interesting shops and clubs. It features a sizeable Turkish population that has influenced local cuisine with an outcropping of tasty kebab eateries. The Boxhagener Kiez neighbourhood park is a great place to enjoy some rich German coffee and let the kids run off their excess energy on the playground. It is surrounded by numerous pubs and restaurants that serve the local “Berliner brunch” specialties, and you can bargain hunt in the flea market every Sunday.
- View and photograph unique Friedrichshain landmarks such as the Fountain of Legends located in the lovely and peaceful Volkspark and beautiful Oberbaumbrücke, the bridge connecting this borough to nearby Kreuzberg.
- Stroll down Karl-Marx-Allee, the former main boulevard of East Berlin, and admire the picturesque fountains and neoclassical DDR-era architecture, which is best exemplified by the huge apartment complexes.
- Explore the East Side Gallery, which is a collection of thought-provoking murals decorating the last standing part of the defunct Berlin Wall, all of which were created after the Cold War ended.
Friedrichshain is about seventeen kilometres from Tegel Airport, which is scheduled to close in August of 2012. Visitors travelling by air after August will land at the Berlin Brandenberg Airport, located 27 kilometres away using the A113 and B96a motorways. You can reach the district by airport taxi or one of the economical shared minibuses, but there are many other public transportation options in Friedrichshain. The S-Bahn commuter rail serves this neighbourhood with the Warschauer Straße station (which is closest to the remains of the Berlin Wall) and the Ostkreuz station. U-Bahn subway lines 1 and 5 provide metro transport.
