Ethnological Museum hotels
Berlin’s Ethnological Museum is home to one of the world’s largest exhibitions of cultural diversity. Begun in 1873, the museum has exhibits from Asia, Australia, Africa, the Pacific, and the Americas. Its multi-media displays include sound recordings, artefacts, and interactive pieces. The collections show a distinct emphasis on displaying the artefacts in context with their backgrounds and history. Kids are encouraged to climb aboard the South Seas exhibit replica ships. There are reconstructed houses representing many cultures. Visitors to the Ethnological Museum’s have the opportunity to view half a million pre-industrial objects.
- Visit the Berlin Ethnological Museum’s impressive Africa collection, with its traditional masks, ritual objects, musical instruments, bronzes from the country of Beni, and contemporary African artworks.
- Do check out the South Seas hall, which displays built-to-scale traditional ocean-going vessels of the South Pacific cultures of Australia, New Guinea, Palau, New Caledoni, and other islands.
- Take the kids to the Ethnological Museum’s Junior Museum, which includes a virtual journey that takes them from Berlin to Africa’s Sahara desert.
The Ethnological Museum is located in Berlin’s Dahlem neighbourhood, which lies within the borough of Steglitz-Zehlendorf. Berlin has an excellent system of trains, underground, trams, and buses. Taxicabs are also available, as are hired cars. The Ethnological Museum is part of the National Museums of Berlin complex, which includes three others museums. The complex is often referred to as the Dahlem Museums. The underground and several bus lines stop nearby. Many German museums are closed on Mondays, so be sure to check the current hours of operation before you go.
