Checkpoint Charlie hotels
From 1961 to 1990 Checkpoint Charlie was the moniker given to the most infamous passing point from East Berlin to the West. From the moment the Soviet Union instigated its construction to prevent East to West emigration until the eventual fall, of the Berlin Wall, no one could argue that Berlin has not had an interesting modern history and that Checkpoint Charlie was a big part of it. During the Berlin Crisis, which was at the height of the Cold War, American and Soviet tanks squared off in a tense moment. At that time Checkpoint Charlie, the only crossing point by foot or by automobile in the Berlin Wall, acted as a grim symbol for the division of East and West Germany.
- Visit the Haus am Checkpoint Charlie Museum in Berlin to learn the fascinating history of the area. The museum is symbolically guarded by an American and Soviet soldier, which represents the eventually unification of Germany.
- Take a picture with an actor dressed as one of the military policemen that used to guard over Checkpoint Charlie.
- Visit the open aired Allied Museum in Berlin-Zehlendorf, which displays the last guard booth used for Checkpoint Charlie before the Wall fell.
Because Berlin features some of the best and most efficient public transportation in the world it should not be too much trouble to get to Checkpoint Charlie. There are stops for the S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains all over the area, so visitors to Checkpoint Charlie can get off at a number of stops and then just walk to the location. Any Berlin bus or taxi will drop you off in close proximity to Checkpoint Charlie as it is a popular tourist area. People who want to get their passport stamped at Checkpoint Charlie should beware that there is no official border there so anyone offering to stamp a passport for a fee is a con artist that will render the document invalid.
