The Bethanien Centre for Performing Arts, located in the western town of Kreuzberg in east-central Berlin, has a long, dynamic history. In 1847 this historic location was commissioned by then King Friedrich Wilhelm IV as a deaconess institute, nurse’s training centre, and hospital. Later, by the end of the 1800s, it had collapsed into ruin only to be occupied by squatters until the hospital’s official closing in 1970. Following significant reconstruction work in 1973, and further improvements over the years that followed, Bethanien soon became one of the city’s most prominent arts, cultural, and social institutions, and remains so today.

Berlin’s extensive public transportation network makes accessing Bethanien’s Kruisberg district easy. Templehof Airport is closest to this historic destination, while the main entry points to the district are the U-Bahn (Underground) train stations of Kottbusser Tor and Mehringdamm. U-Bahn and S-Bahn (Suburban) trains cover most parts of the district as well as the entirety of Berlin, as do buses, trams, and taxis. Both train systems (excluding trams) are closed for operation between the hours of 1 and 4 AM, Monday to Friday. During this period, however, night buses (identified by the letter N) traverse major city routes.
