Bahnhof Zoo hotels
Originally built in 1882, the Bahnhof Zoo was Berlin’s major railway station for many years, including the years when both political strife and the Berlin Wall divided the city. After the city’s unification in 1989, the Zoo (also called the Berlin Zoologischer Garten station) remained the city’s foremost transportation hub until the larger Berlin Central Station opened in 2006. The Bahnhof Zoo can be found near several of the city’s attractions; however, the facility itself has become a tourist destination, due to its appearance in popular films, novels, and songs.
- To see exotic animals from around the world, visit the Berlin Zoologischer Garten (Garden Zoo), which is located just outside the Bahnhof Zoo railway station.
- Stop at the Berlin Tourist Office desk, located inside the railway station, to get information about the city’s attractions.
- Walk around the Breitscheidplatz, an outdoor square near the Bahnhof Zoo, to see some of Berlin’s historic sites, including Kaiser-Wilhelm Memorial Church.
The greater Berlin area is serviced by two airports: Tegel International Airport and Schönefeld Airport, both of which offer air travel from domestic and international destinations. From Tegel International, travellers can take the city’s public buses directly to the Bahnhof Zoo by using routes X9 and 109. Visitors who arrive at Schönefeld Airport can get to the railway station in about 35 minutes by taking one of the express trains. Within Berlin itself, the city’s double decker bus system offers a scenic and convenient way to reach Bahnhof Zoo and its surrounding area.
