The magnificent Alexanderplatz in the centre of Berlin is undoubtedly home to some of Germany’s most stunning architectural achievements. In 2001, Project Blinkenlights was established at architect Hermann Henselmann’s Haus des Lehrers. Despite its modern architecture, Alexanderplatz’ history extends back to the middle ages, where it was originally a cattle market outside the fortifications of the city. On a sunny day, perhaps while meeting a friend for coffee at the popular Brunnen der Völkerfreundschaft, it’s possible to see the “Pope’s Revenge,” a huge cross formed by sunlight glinting from the Fernsehturm’s large ball.
- Check your watch against the World Time Clock, a recently refurbished monument in the square depicting the time in various different countries, including some additions, which were originally omitted for political reasons.
- Take the camera up to the viewing platform of the monolithic Fernsehturm (television tower) overlooking the Alexanderplatz in Berlin. It was based on Hermann Henselmann’s original design, and at 368 metres remains the highest structure in Germany.
- Relax by the Neptunbrunnen (Neptune fountain), an imposing fountain situated near Rotes Rathaus (Berlin Town Hall), depicting Neptune and four nymphs (each of whom represent a German river).
As the new Berlin Brandenburg airport is under construction, Tegel International Airport remains the closest to the square, situated some eight kilometres northwest of Berlin. From Tegel, the Jet ExpressBus makes the short journey directly to Alexanderplatz. Bahnhof Alexanderplatz (Berlin Alexanderplatz station) is the central hub of the impressive square, and hosts transport via train and tram to many outer regions, as well as restaurants and retail shops. Taxis and buses are plentiful in the city, and as the ancient square lies in the heart of Berlin, it’s easy to get around on foot.
