The verdant city of Versailles is nestled on the western edge of Paris, France. Dominated by the majestic Château de Versailles, which humbly started as a hunting lodge, the city draws hordes of visitors who want to see how Marie-Antoinette and other French royalty lived. No expense was spared to construct the opulent quarters, gilt halls, and sprawling gardens. The central venue for French politics under Louis XIV, the palace is still used for important political meetings as well as art exhibitions. The Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors) is where the treaty ending World War I was signed.
- Catch a ride on the Petit Train to the Petit Trianon, Queen’s Hamlet, and Grand Trianon, which is where Napoleon resided when away from Paris.
- Watch a musical fountain show at Château de Versailles’ GrandesEauxMusicaux on weekends in spring through fall.
- Visit the Notre Dame district of Versailles to see the church, market, and MuséeLambinet, which contains exhibits on the French Revolution and Paris.
