Arc de Triomphe
Standing majestically in the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle, the Arc de Triomphe is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable structures in all of Paris. The Arc de Triomphe was originally built as a monument to those who died in the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. The monument was designed by Jean Chalgrin in Paris in 1806 and features renderings of naked French youths waging battle against fierce looking Germanic warriors in armour. The Arc de Triomphe is one of the great patriotic structures in the world and an important part of French culture and history. For travellers to this beautiful city, a view of this magnificent monument lit up at night is an unforgettable experience.
- Visit the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, which lies beneath the Arc de Triomphe and honours the unidentified soldier who died in Paris or abroad.
- Marvel at the Great Arcades of the Arc de Triomphe, which have carved allegorical figures meant to represent Roman mythological characters.
- Triomphe, all which memorialize important moments from either the French Revolution or the Napoleonic Wars.
Since the Arc de Triomphe is one of the central structures in Paris it can easily be reached in a number of ways and visitors to the city will almost certainly come across its path at some point during their visit. It can be reached by both the Metro and the RER by getting off at the Charles de Gaulle/Etoile station. There is usually heavy traffic on the roundabout that goes round the Arc de Triomphe people on foot should use the underpass found on Champs Elysees to avoid being run over. To get to the top of the monument there is a lift that takes you part of the way and then an additional 46 steps to the observation deck at the top with great views of the city.
