Eglise Russe hotels
The EgliseRusse, or St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, is Western Europe’s largest Orthodox cathedral. It was opened in 1912 by the generosity of Czar Nicholas II. The building is spacious and includes prime examples of Orthodox religious icons. With its beautiful blue and green onion domes topped with orthodox crosses above the p inkish-caramel building, the EgliseRusse stands out in the landscape of Nice as being entirely Russian. For this alone it would be worth seeing, but the opportunity to see the glorious inside and its icons is even more tempting.
- Tour the building and see over 300 Russian icons; these were, for the most part, donated to the EgliseRusse by Russian refugees after the 1917 revolution.
- Take a picnic and relax on the lawn with some of the Russian visitors to Nice; the vertical view of the EgliseRusse is even more imposing from below!
- Pick up a postcard or souvenir at the visitor centre; one of the landmarks of Nice, this unique cathedral is a gem you will want to share with your family.
Once in Nice (trains, planes, buses and cars all will get you to this city on the Cote d’Azur), you can use local bus lines 4 or 7 to get to the EgliseRusse. When walking around the city, the tiled onion domes stand out in a crowd, making the EgliseRusse difficult to miss! Walking distances in the old town are short, and both taxis and parking are scarce and a bit expensive. You could also rent a bicycle from the city rental system; 30 minutes for free and many stations around the city make this a good option.
