The Colmar Rundown

The historic city of Colmar in the Alsace region of France is stunningly picturesque. Canals cross its Old Town, and the streets are lined with buildings representing Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-Baroque, Classicism and Neo-Classicism styles of architecture. Wandering around Old Town’s narrow streets transports you back to medieval times. There are several notable churches not to be missed, including Église Saint-Martin, which is the city’s largest church. The Église des Dominicains is also a popular attraction for its display of the famous painting, ‘La Vierge au buisson de roses’. Check out the Maison Pfister, one of the oldest buildings in Colmar, and the Maison des Têtes, which is adorned with plaster heads. Take time to explore the Unterlinden Museum and its extensive collection of medieval, Baroque, Renaissance and international modern art, as well as the ‘Isenheim Altarpiece’ painted by Matthias Grünewald. You would be remiss leaving Colmar without having a glass or two of wine, as the city is considered the ‘Capital of Alsace Wine’, or a boat ride down one of the canals, as the city is also known as the ‘Venice of Alsace’. Note, some shops close on Sundays, and some museums and restaurants are closed Mondays.

When To Go

The Vosges Mountains largely shield the Alsace region from rain and extreme weather. Thus, Colmar boasts a mostly sunny and dry climate. Rainfall in Colmar averages 500-550 mm (19.7-21.7 inches) annually, with the most occurring in May through October, although any month can see some days of rain. Snow is also probable in December through March, but isn’t too common. July and August are the warmest months of the year, whilst January is the coldest.

  • Spring (March-May): 2-20°C (36-73°F)
  • Summer (June-August) 12-26°C (54-79°F)
  • Autumn (September-November) 2-21°C (36-70°F)
  • Winter (December-February) -1-6°C (30-43°F)

Getting There

If you are flying, you can fly into EuroAirport in Basel or the Strasbourg International Airport in Strasbourg. Both cities are connected to Colmar via a short direct train connection. France’s extensive rail network essentially lets you connect to Colmar from any city, with a transfer in Strasbourg or Mulhouse. There is also regular, regional bus service provided by the LK Groupe and the municipal TRACE buses. Colmar’s attractions are concentrated in its Old Town, which you can navigate by foot.

  • By air: EuroAirport/Strasbourg International Airport
