Lappeenranta General Information

Lappeenranta has some impressive claims to fame in Finland, most notably as a spa town and platform to explore massive Lake Saimaa. The largest lake in the country, and fourth largest on the continent, is the lifeblood of Lappeenranta and a perfect picture-postcard waterway for amateur photographers, nature lovers and hearty recreation enthusiasts. A mere 200 km from the brilliant, UNESCO World Heritage city of Saint Petersburg, Lappeenranta is a popular and fashionable day or weekend trip for many Russians, a good percentage of whom covet the luxury goods and wares on hand in the town’s myriad shops.

Home to more than 70,000 people, Lappeenranta is a superb summer and winter destination. While Lake Saimaa proves irresistible no matter what the season or weather, the former garrison base and vital port town has a solid ensemble of landmarks, museums and monuments to enjoy. Some of the best points of interest in Lappeenranta include the Cavalry Museum, Linnoitus Fortress and Museum and Wolkoff Home Museum. The South Karelia Art Museum unfurls a prodigious collection of regional art and Lappee Church is a terrific example of traditional wooden architecture. Myllysaari Beach Sauna doles out curative treatments and Lappeenranta’s annual events calendar includes two gems in the South Karelian Folk Festival and Night of the Fortress Festival.
