Punavuori is a neighbourhood near the centre of Helsinki that once held a colourful, if unsavoury, reputation. During the nineteenth and early twentieth century this was a place of brothels and high crime. But after World War II, the neighbourhood began to change for the better. Now it is known for being a place of cafes, shops, and nightclubs. The area's nickname is Rööperi, which comes from the Swedish name for the neighbourhood. The Beatles recorded a song, Rööperin, which is all about coming to Punavuori. Take their advice and come visit.
- Take a walk through Sinebrychoff Park, named for the soft drink company, which provides an oasis of nature in the midst of Helsinki.
- Discover an emerging new artist by visiting the popular 00130Gallery in Punavuori, which consists of two rooms full of new art by new artists.
- Listen to cool, new music at AugUst Burns Red, an alternative music and dance house in Helsinki, which features live bands in the alternative style.
Visitors to Helsinki will find that public transportation is the best way to get around the city. There are special tourist passes that allow you to travel on the buses and metro as much as you want for up to five days. Buses and metros stop running at around 1:30 in the morning. Taxis are available at any time although the rates go up at 10pm. Hiring a car and driving is not difficult but finding parking is. The Green company is right in Punavuori and rents out bicycles, which is a mode of transportation that is growing in popularity.
