Ateneum Art Museum
The Ateneum Art Museum is a museum in Finland, located in the Rautatientori Square at the heart of Helsinki. The building was designed by architect Theodor Hoijer and was completed in 1887, making it one of the oldest art museums in the city. This museum is the home to the largest collection of classical art in the whole country, but many people also come just to see the building itself, and to admire the ornate design details that adorn the façade. The Ateneum Art Museum is a must-visit for art and architecture lovers in Helsinki.
- Explore the façade of the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki and look for the symbolic statues and reliefs that can be found in niches around the outside, including the busts of Raphael, Phidias and Bramante by Helsinki artist Carl Sjöstrand.
- Visit the 52 Souls exhibit at the museum to see symbolist landscape paintings from 1880-1910, including works by Van Gogh and Edvard Munch.
- Go to the third floor of the museum to see the permanent collection that includes a variety of Helsinki artists, such as Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Hugo Simberg.
Helsinki has an efficient system of public transportation that makes it easy to get to the Ateneum Art Museum from anywhere in the city. The best way to get there is to take the Helsinki Metro and get off at the Central Railway Station, which is just a short walk away from the Ateneum Art Museum. There are also bus, train, and tram services to the Central Station, giving visitors plenty of options for transportation. Note that if you would like to have a guided tour of the museum, you will need to arrange it in advance.
