Parnu General Information
The “Summer Capital of Estonia” is a popular spa and health resort with a vast, magnificent beach on the Gulf of Riga. Without question, Parnu is nonpareil in the superb Baltic state. As a result, the warm summer months lure waves of tourists to the small city of 45,000 people.
Though the youthful merrymakers who crowd Parnu’s boardwalk bars and restaurants may not realize it, they’re far from the first to stumble on the handsome seaside settlement. The city’s roots date back to the 13th century in fact and for a time, Parnu was even a member of the venerable Hanseatic League. While Parnu’s reputation as a health resort is, admittedly, not quite as old, it nonetheless took hold in the early 19th century. Hot seawater baths and saunas sat astride the massive Gulf of Riga beach as early as 1838 and the rest, as they say, is summer resort history. Aside from spas and a picture-postcard coastline, Parnu entices visitors with a tidy architectural ensemble and worthwhile points of interest like the Town Hall, Church of Jekaterina, Lydia Koidula Memorial Museum and New Art Museum. The International Documentary and Anthropology Film Festival is a major annual event in the city.
