Khan al-Khalili hotels
The Khan al-Khalili is one of Egypt’s most famous souks, or markets, located in Cairo. It began in the fourteenth century, and was built upon the site of the Za’afran Tomb, where the founders of Cairo were laid to rest. The market was instrumental in establishing Cairo as a trade centre for the region. The souk’s medieval layout remains, with its labyrinthine streets and passageways. Today you can wander through Khan al-Khalili, marvelling at the profusion of shiny metal crafts, colourful pottery, and intoxicating spices. It remains a shopping hub, as many Cairo residents frequent the market for their daily needs and so on.
- Haggle a possible bargain for unique souvenirs in Cairo’s Khan al-Khalili, such as brass and copper wares, textiles, silver jewellery, candles, and much more.
- Sip some tea in one of the many Egyptian tea shops (Fishawi’s Café is a famous cafe) located within Khan al-Khalili, where you can sample hibiscus, Karakadé teas or, for smokers, the traditional hookah water pipe.
- Visit the Al-Hussein Mosque, located next to Khan al-Khalili, one of Cairo’s holiest Islamic sites, where what is believed to be the oldest complete Quran resides.
Cairo is a huge, sprawling city. Public transportation consists of a metro subway system, buses, and taxicabs. The metro provides a traffic-free way to get around; however, it does not reach all parts of Cairo. Buses offer a wider network of routes, yet are often crowded and not all are air-conditioned. Taxicabs are a popular way for tourists to navigate this sometimes confusing city. Khan al-Khalili is accessible by metro and bus, but most tourists opt to take a taxicab, and forget about confusing directions and the language barrier. Once there, let your feet wander through its magical passageways.
