Egyptian Museum Cairo
With more than 120,000 artefacts on site, the Egyptian Museum Cairo is one destination that holidaymakers and dedicated historians alike cannot afford to miss. Visitors to this breath-taking destination in Cairo, Africa can view priceless artefacts gleaned from the tombs of Ancient pharaohs, as well as inspect ancient coins and papyrus, and experience first-hand more than 5,000 years of history chronicled by this massive collection.
- Tour the highlight of the Egyptian Museum Cairo, the world-famous tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamen, located on the museum’s upper floor. A number of remarkable artefacts found in this Pharaoh’s well-preserved tomb in 1923 by Howard Carter are now on display. Visitors can view the ancient trumpet, the gold funerary mask and sarcophagus, and several massive gilded shrines that were designed to sit inside one another like nesting dolls.
- Visit the royal Mummy Room, a display providing access to 11 additional royal mummies for those visitors willing to spend a little more to see Egypt’s rarest treasures. An adjoining room featuring mummified birds and animals, however, can be entered at no additional cost.
- Explore the atrium of the Egyptian Museum Cairo while marvelling at the vast collection of artefacts illustrating early Egyptian history. Some of the items on display here include diverse statues from the Old Kingdom and period pieces from the time of the Pharoah Akhenaten, among other rare treasures.
Visitors traveling to the Egyptian Museum Cairo by public transport should take the underground Metro to the Sadat Station where a generous amount of signage is posted leading travellers to the Egyptian Museum Cairo exit. From there, the museum is located only a short walking distance away. Taxis are also abundantly available throughout the city of Cairo.
