Playa Macao hotels
The stunning beach of Playa Macao, in the Punta Cana region of the Dominican Republic, has been highlighted as being one of the best in the entire Caribbean due to its amazingly fine white sand, ideal for walking or just lying around on. The huge number of towering palm trees just adds to the glorious tropical feel of the place. The surfers flock to ride the high waves, and from the cliffs overlooking the beach you can look beyond the surf towards an area where the diving schools explore a local shipwreck.
- Take the opportunity to dine on genuine fresh fish at the Playa Macao Beach restaurant, where they actually cook the fish on the beach as soon as it is plucked from the ocean.
- Hire a dune buggy at Punta Cana and enjoy the exhilarating feel of the vehicle beneath you as you power across the breathtaking landscapes of this fabulous part of the island.
- Take a break from chilling out on Playa Macao beach and explore the coral reefs of Punta Cana as you snorkel amongst nurse sharks and giant sting rays.
Without doubt the best way to get around the Dominican Republic in general, and Punta Cana in particular, is by hired car. These are available upon arrival at the Punta Cana International Airport, as are motorcycles, although the state of the roads can make riding them a little hazardous. There are many buses that get you close to the Playa Macao beach, but the timetable is not that reliable. The guagua bus is a little unconventional, but a fun part of the culture, whereby you flag them down and they pick up and drop off anywhere along the route.
