Aarhus General Information
The venerable capital of Jutland is the pulse point of a vibrant metropolis that totals some 1.2 million people. As the “Second City” of Denmark, Aarhus offers a fine counterpoint to Copenhagen. With laudable landmarks and copious points of interest to enjoy, Aarhus is perfect for a weekend trip or week-long Jutland sojourn.
The Aarhus cityscape preserves a beautiful range of period architecture and heritage monuments not altogether common in the rest of Denmark. Add lush hills, verdant meadows, forest parks and a sandy coast to the mix and Aarhus emerges as one eminently handsome destination. The Old Town is a veritable open-air museum of half-timbered estates and gardens. Attractions in this throwback village include a Textile Museum, Toy Museum and the Danish Clock Museum. ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum is a gigantic repository of art from the Danish Golden Age and avant-garde contemporary installations. The Moesgaard Museum yields a formidable collection from Denmark’s Iron Age and the Aarhus Domkirke (Cathedral) is a medieval masterpiece. With close to 40,000 students, Aarhus University is a vital academic institution in Nordic Europe (the Danish sovereign Queen Margrethe II is a notable alum) and rubber-stamps Aarhus as a lively college town.
