Olsany Cemetery hotels
The Olsany Cemetery is the largest facility of its kind in Prague. The cemetery was established in 1680 after the onslaught of a horrific plague in order to accommodate the large number of victims. When another plague struck the city a century later, Olsany Cemetery was designated the harrowing but culturally significant grounds for burying these hygiene-related victims, as the area was, at the time, located outside the city—a ruling that was later lifted. The sprawling graveyard hosts 65,000 gravestones surrounded by beautiful gardens, though locals recognize the cemetery as a commemorating ground for over 2 million individuals. The Olsany Cemetery is full of art nouveau monuments as well as two ceremonial halls and six columbariums.
- Walk the Olšany Cemetery Learning Trail whilst in Prague to see the oldest sections of the cemetery.
- View the headstone of Jan Palach, a student who died after lighting himself on fire in protest of the Soviet occupation of Prague in 1969.
- Visit the Chapels of St. Roch, St. Sebastian, and St. Rosalia whilst in Prague, which are structures commemorating patrons who fought against sickness and plague.
The Olsany Cemetery assumes most of the Žižkov district of Prague, located in the eastern outskirts of the city. Visitors can drive private cars for a distance of 3 kilometres along Vinohradska Road to reach these harrowed grounds. Public transportation options such as buses, trams, and metros take visitors throughout the city and stop near Olsany Cemetery. Olsany itself is a stop along the green metro Line A. Get off at the Vsehrad stop and follow the signs for Vysehrad. The area’s surrounding city centre is located within a thirty-minute drive from the Prague Airport, the latter of which is located 59 kilometres from Olsany.
