Old New Synagogue
The Old New Synagogue of Prague (despite it’s rather odd name) is hailed as the oldest extant synagogue in Europe, and is one of the primary locations for tourists who chose to visit the Czech Republic. The religious building is still an active place of worship among the Jewish community, and is the oldest synagogue which has a medieval double-nave. Travellers enjoy visiting the Old New Synagogue as it is rich in classic Gothic architecture apart from being heralded for its historical importance. Visitors can view the tattered red flag which represented the Jewish city in 1357 during the reign of Charles IV.
- View the frayed red banner which is hung with pride next to the Jewish flag in Prague; a present by the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III.
- Explore the eastern wall of the Old New Synagogue, which not only faces Jerusalem, but is also where the Torah scrolls are guarded with care in the ark at Prague.
- Be enchanted by the intricacies of the ark in the Old New Synagogue, which is adorned with symbols related to the Temple of Jerusalem.
Prague Integrated Transport (PIT) is a fast and convenient mode of travel, and can be used to reach the Old New Synagogue. It consists of three metro lines, regional trains across Prague, as well as a number of tram lines and bus services. The public transport around the Old New Synagogue runs into the night and is fairly extensive, with night trams and buses arriving every thirty minutes. Taxis are also available for moving about and to the Old New Synagogue, but one would need to be cautious as tourists tend to be overcharged.
