Old Jewish Cemetery
Stories older than the old graves speak from the tombs in this crowded cemetery nestled in the heart of Josefov, the Jewish centre of Prague, Czech Republic. Dating back prior to the 15th century, the Old Jewish Cemetery has been cherished and preserved through time. When the cemetery ran out of room, they expanded up instead of out. Layered graves, at least 12 deep, make it impossible to quantify the cemetery’s inhabitants. The Old Jewish Cemetery is part of a collection of exhibits that make up the Jewish Museum in Prague.
- See the tombs of notable Jewish figures from Prague and the surrounding area like David Oppenheim, David Gans, poet Avigdor Karo, and the Maharal Rabbi Loew, at the Old Jewish Cemetery.
- Count more than 12,000 tombstones that were raised from lower levels and added in with the new stones as more earth was brought in to accommodate the next level of graves.
- Discover tales of conspiracy, the history of Golem, and the richness of the Jewish life in Prague throughout history on a tour of the Old Jewish Cemetery.
The Old Jewish Cemetery is conveniently located on Fibichova Street, in Prague, and is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. until 15:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. until 13:00 p.m. Visitors can expect an affordable 50 CZK admission fee or 90 CZK for the entire museum complex. Public transportation is the most common way to get around within the beautiful city. Buses, taxis, trams, and the metro are available to holiday-goers. To get to the Old Jewish Cemetery, get off the underground train at the Staromestska station.
