Diocletian's Palace hotels
Diocletian’s Palace was once the intended retirement home for the Roman emperor Diocletian, built in the fourth century, but now it serves a very purpose. This once elaborate estate fell to disuse and then became occupied with residents and businesses. In the beginning, parts of the city were built within the palace and overflowed to form the city centre of Split. Enter Diocletian’s Palace via the Gold, Silver, Iron, or Bronze gate. Though the businesses may be closed at times, you can stroll along the streets of the palace any time of night your day you desire.
- Admire the historic architecture of the City Museum of Split or learn about Split through the historic exhibits located within like.
- Explore the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, the site of the original mausoleum, that now boasts a granite sphinx, ornate décor, and a bell tower you can climb and see views of the city as well as the Adriatic Sea.
- Explore the arts and crafts businesses on the basement level of Diocletian’s Palace and take home a few locally made souvenirs like stone craft, sea sponges, T-shirts, and olive oil from shops like Priska.
Regional buses transport travellers between Split and outlying areas, though local buses are available to take people to sights within the city. These buses can drop you near any of the hallowed gates at Diocletian’s Palace, though walking is the only way to go about once inside. To get to Diocletian’s Palace from far away, you may choose to travel via air, land, or water. The Adriatic Express provides boat taxi services. The Split Airport brings plane travellers close to the city centre, where the Palace is located. The train system provides a solid travel experience while presenting gorgeous scenic views.
