Great Value

Spent the first three and last two nights of our stay in China (mid to late June 2014) at this hotel. The hotel is located at the northern end of the Bund just across the Waibaidu Bridge. The staff was very friendly and helpful and gladly stored our belongings free of charge for the 10 days we toured other areas of China. The rooms were large, immaculately clean and comfortable. Our first room on the second floor had been more recently renovated and the bed was much more comfortable than our second room on the fourth floor, but both rooms were more than adequate. Our room price did not include breakfast, so we did not eat there except for one morning. The breakfast buffet was excellent. It had a large variety of Western and Chinese dishes.

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

Have a copy of the hotel name in Chinese characters or its phone number handy. Our taxi driver from the airport had no idea what hotel we wanted using the name Astor House, nor did he know the street by name, although other taxi drivers we used during our stay were very familiar with the hotel. Also, because of the traffic congestion from the Pudong airport, it would be advisable, if you don't have too much luggage, to take the Maglev from the airport to the city and then take a taxi from the Maglev station to the hotel. We took the Maglev on our return trip. The overall cost is not much of a difference, but it is much quicker. If you are going from/to the Pudong airport within 7 days you can get a roundtrip ticket at a discount. Also, a day trip to Zhujiajiao was one of the highlights of our time in Shanghai. It took a little over an hour to get there by public bus. The town is definitely the Venice of China. We opted for a combination ticket that included entry to 8 venues, but used only 6 of them. Depending on time, one might prefer to simply pay on a per venue basis.

Shanghai city escape

I loved this hotel - beautiful historic building, staff friendly and helpful. Paid for a room upgrade so we got free wifi which was only necessary for a work matter, room was huge, very comfortable and palatial. Breakfast wasn't included in our cost but we paid for it anyway, lots of choices in the buffet particularly for Asian food but also western choices. Close to walk to the Bund and reasonable walk to East Nanjing Road station for the metro. Laundry costs reasonable too (for a hotel!) Definitely would stay again.

Back in Time

I stayed in this hotel with my wife and kid on may 2011, Price was just right, Once I saw the hotel from outside and enter the lobby, I definitely felt that i was living in the early 1900s or the late 1800s but this time "In full HD" and "colored". the room was really big! it's around 70-80 square meters. Old wooden creeky floor, big doors. Charlie Chaplin and some other famous people had stayed in this hotel although it wasn't called astor that time. My child said it was creepy though we had a great experience. note:beware of taxi drivers who would drive you circles.

A good value-for-money hotel in

A good value-for-money hotel in a great location. While rooms are large and the 'original' floor boards have been retained, it is time for the floors to be upgraded (for health and safety) and some furniture should be replaced. Staff assistance in the main lobby area was very good. Room service was not so good. A good range of food was provided at breakfast but the 'hot' food was often too cold to enjoy. Other food areas for lunch/dinner etc were very disappointing.

It's an historic building age

It's an historic building age 160 years !!. The corridor is smelly but the rooms are all clean. bathroom is nice n modern. It is an old English hotel but didn't serve English afternoon tea or breakfast. Location is superb as it's right next to Bund and near Nanking Road.

Overpriced for quality offered.

Overpriced for quality offered. TV sound from next door room a problem - walls must be thin or TV loud. Creaky, and a bit awkward. Location the key.

Great location at north side of

Great location at north side of the Waibaidu Bridge, north end of the bund. the lift to go to the rooms is on a level about about 10 steps up from the foyer level. the stair steps had no handrails so my elderly mum could not leave the hotel or go to breakfast without help up or down these stairs. the hotel had run out of key cards so we could only get one key to share between us; the desk staff thought it was very funny. the breakfast room was grand and the food was varied and plentifull. the room was spacious and the bathroom was recently renovated.

Good value for money hotel. I

Good value for money hotel. I paid the extra for the Executive Room which I was happy with. Staff are helpful though English can be a problem but after all you are visiting a foreign country. The bar is in big need of an update as is the coffee shop. Not much around the hotel, a few local restaurants which are OK. Taxis are cheap so you can get anywhere easily. When the construction ends for World Expo the hotel location will be excellent for the Bund and the sites of Pudong. Nanjing Road is a A$3 taxi trip.
