Ming Tombs hotels
The Ming Dynasty Tombs of Beijing are located some 50 km from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Built at the behest of the Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, the tombs rank as one of the country’s pre-eminent points of interest.
As the very same ruler who moved the Chinese capital from Nanjing to Beijing in the early 15th century and led the way for the city’s Imperial layout, the Yongle Emperor had grand visions for the final interment of his Ming Dynasty predecessors. The vast Imperial cemetery covers more than 40 km2 and is a brilliant exemplar of traditional Feng Shui landscape design and architecture. While only a portion of the massive site is open to the public, the valley necropolis is under perpetual excavation and study by archaeologists and field scientists. As such, future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy more of this extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Ming Dynasty Tombs are at the foot of Tianshou Mountain, in the Changping District of metropolitan Beijing. The site is easily accessible by bus.
The UNESCO World Heritage inscription “Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties” includes many other sites throughout the People’s Republic of China.
