Dongcheng is a district of Beijing, China located in the eastern portion of the city. Not only is it one of the largest districts in China’s sprawling metropolis, but it also houses some of the most popular and significant attractions, making it a must-visit for anyone that comes to this capital city. With a diverse mixture of modern buildings, chic restaurants and hotels scattered among the ancient sites of the Old City, Dongcheng is one of the region’s most eclectic districts. With plenty of night markets and temples to explore you can get a real taste of the ancient culture.

  • Explore one of the largest and most controversial public squares in the world on a visit to Tian’anmen Square, a beautiful 15th century square where some of the most important historical events in Beijing have taken place.
  • Find peace in Dongcheng at the Temple of Confucius, a 14th century temple that offers the ideal place to escape the bustle of Beijing.

There is no way around the fact that Beijing is a massive, crowded city that sometimes makes getting around a hassle. However, if you avoid driving and instead use the city’s public transport, getting to Dongcheng won’t be too difficult. The easiest way to get there is to take subway line 2 and get off at one of the many stations that service the district. You can also use line 1 or line 5, both of which have stops in Dongcheng. Taxis are plentiful but not cheap and should be avoided during peak traffic times.
