Forbidden City hotels
For nearly five hundred years the mysterious Forbidden City in Beijing was home to the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasty, as well as the political and social centre of the Chinese empire. The 980 buildings that make up this walled palace compound were built in classical Chinese palatial architecture and constitute the largest collection of ancient wooden structures found anywhere in the world. Now millions of visitors each year penetrate the high walls of the Forbidden City to stroll through the ornate courtyards, halls and throne rooms, each of which is highly decorated with symbolic artwork.
- Visit the Inner Court, where the Palaces of Heavenly Purity and Heavenly Tranquillity were once the residence of the Emperor and Empress and represent the contrasting forces of Yin and Yang.
- Marvel at the golden throne in the Forbidden City's Hall of Preserving Harmony, where the emperor once sat and presided over Beijing.
- Walk the courtyard around the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the largest wooden structure in Beijing that rises thirty metres above the square and was the ceremonial centre of imperial power.
The Forbidden City is Beijing's most popular attraction and is located at the heart of the city so it can be reached in a number of ways. Passengers using Subway line 1 should get off at the Tiananmen West or Tiananmen East station and walk north to the Meridian Gate. There are also many bus routes with stops in the area, so the best plan is to use a combination of public transportation and walking. Driving in this crowded city is not for the faint of heart and should be avoided, as the traffic is heavy and the roads confusing.
