Easter Island General Information

It’s not hard to succumb to hyperbolic impulses and wax quixotic about a place like Easter Island/Rapa Nui. The South Pacific island is incomparable and so remote, you have to zoom way, way out on Google Maps before you spot another island or land mass. In fact, Easter Island is a full 3,500 km west of Chile and more than 2,000 km east of tiny Pitcairn Island. It’s incredible that Captain James Cook ever found the island at all.

Though tales of Easter Island’s iconic statues had spread throughout circumnavigation circles in Europe for decades, Cook’s expedition in 1774 was the first to take stock of the ahu and moai sites that form the basis of the island’s UNESCO World Heritage inscription. Later of course, more and more furtive raids by colonial slave ships would devastate the island’s native population and introduce diseases to those left behind. Today, Easter Island has a community of about 5,000 people, most of whom live in and around the town of Hanga Roa. The attraction for tourists is undeniably the ensemble of ahu and moai sites that litter the island. However, recreation enthusiasts will appreciate Easter Island’s beaches, eminently surfable waves and abundance of world class dive sites as well.
