Wat Phnom hotels
Wat Phnom, or “Temple of the Mountains,” is a Buddhist temple located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Built in 1373, it is the tallest religious building in the city and is the centre of the local Khmer New Year’s celebration. Frequent renovations have been made throughout the centuries, as the city of Phnom Penh has emerged and developed around the temple. Legend has it that a woman named Penh found a koki tree with four bronze statues of the Buddha inside it. She then created a shrine to protect the statues, from which Wat Phnom grew.
- Enjoy the lovely green garden around Wat Phnom; these grounds are often used for concerts, festivals and some of the best New Year’s celebrations in Phnom Penh.
- Visit the Wat Phnom temple itself, and see its beautiful ceiling mural and large Buddha statue; remember to observe proper temple etiquette such as removing shoes before entering.
- Ride the temple’s mascot, an elephant named “Sam Bo,” who has provided rides to visitors to Phnom Penh for many decades.
Visitors have many options for getting around in Phnom Penh. There are taxicabs, which are the most expensive option. Visitors can also take a tuk-tuk, a motorcycle with a cabin built around it, and a traditional way to navigate Phnom Penh. Although their numbers are dwindling, cyclos (three-wheeled pedal rickshaws), are still available. Those who decide to walk longer distances within the city should be aware of the fact that drivers are not used to yielding to pedestrians. Wat Phnom sits high atop a hill in the city so you should have no trouble finding it.
