Sofia Rundown

Sofia is one of the most ancient Bulgarian cities and serves as the nation's capital. Its excellent native mineral springs are a primary attraction, and they are why the founders established Sofia in the first place. Thepublic mineral baths are still quite popular, and they are centrally located for easy access if you want to take a soak in these therapeutic waters. Sofia has fascinating ruins to explore throughout the area as well. As a result of its long and rich history, the town offers many museums and cultural attractions for visitors. The National Palace of Culture is a huge building commemorating the Communist history of Bulgaria, and the National Museum of History is one of the largest exhibits if its kind in the country. Among numerous other museums are the National Museum of Military History, the National Literary Museum and the National Polytechnic Museum. There is also a wide selection of galleries that you can peruse such as the National Gallery for Foreign Art and the Sofia City Art Gallery. If you love historical architecture, you must see the Amphitheatre of Serdicain the city's centre and the Battenberg Mausoleum, where Prince Alexander I was laid to rest.

When To Go

The weather in Sofia is typically cooler than other areas in Europe. The winters can be very cold with a lot of snowfall, which is great for those who are planning a ski vacation to Vitosha Mountain. Typically, Sofia sees a generous rainfall throughout the year, and 3-4 cm (1.2-1.6 in) of rain per month is not uncommon. April and May are the wettest months, so you want to pack accordingly if you visit in the spring. The summers are warm and pleasant with temperatures that rarely get above 26°C (79°F). October is known to be one of the best months to visit Sofia, as it is usually very mild and the fall colors are gorgeous.

July and August have highs in mid 20s C (mid 70s F); winter lows around -5 to -6 degrees C (23 to 21 degrees F)

Snowfall of 5-6 cm (2-2.4 in) per month from December to February

Rain is common and peaks in April and May

Getting There

Sofia is home to Sofia Airport, which is known to be the busiest airport in Bulgaria, and is situated a short 10 km (6.2 mi) from the town's centre. It offers service to many major European cities, and there are several budget airlines that fly to this airport. There are inexpensive shuttles and buses at the airport to take you to your lodgings once you arrive, or you can take one of the authorized airport taxis.

You can also travel to Sofia by bus or train from many European cities. There is one international bus station and a few smaller bus stations for shorter routes. Train tickets cost roughly twice as much as bus fares, but this mode is faster and more comfortable.

General Information

The capital of Bulgaria is the obvious place to start in a country that has waged its fair share of battles over the centuries. While brain drain emigration and economic troubles continue to dog the Balkan nation, the Republic of Bulgaria is a supreme source of tourist riches. When you consider the country's diverse geography, from Alpine peaks to the Black Sea coast, Byzantine architecture and prehistoric ruins, it becomes crystal clear that Bulgaria is truly blessed.

Sofia is the cosmopolitan jewel of the country and the center of commerce, culture, politics and just about every kind of activity in Bulgaria. The city has a delectable array of magnificent attractions that embody a wide range of styles, from the 6th century Byzantine Church of St. Sophia to the Eastern Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The National Gallery of Foreign Art, Bulgarian Natural History Museum and National Palace of Culture are just three of many wonderful museums to be found in Sofia.
