Schaarbeek is a municipal area in the Brussels capital region. The first time this village was mentioned in history was in 1120, by the name Scarenbecca. It was once known as a village where sour cherries were cultivated, but it has now become the industrial suburb of the city where machinery, chemicals, and clothing are manufactured. The eastern side of Schaarbeek is occupied by more affluent people who find the close proximity to the capital city, airports, and highways, very convenient for their lifestyle. The western side is favoured by mostly Turkish and Moroccan immigrant communities, which makes this area interestingly diverse.
