The Atomium was designed by the groundbreaking architects Andre and Jean Polak for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair as a testament to Belgium’s scientific prowess and architectural ingenuity. Equal parts sculpture and skyscraper, the gleaming metallic structure is intended to replicate an elementary iron crystal enlarged 165 billion times. The Atomium’s physical representation of the peaceful application of atomic energy for scientific advancement made it one of the Brussels World Fair’s most famous symbols to date. Although the structure was only meant to last for the duration of the 1958 Fair, its resounding popularity resulted in long-term preservation.
- Take a trip back through time as you visit the Atomium’s permanent exhibition, delving into the rich history of Brussels in the 1950s.
- Reserve an overnight stay in the Kids’ Sphere and experience a panoramic view of Brussels designed to highlight other symbolic elements of the city’s skyline.
- Enjoy one of the Atomium’s temporary exhibits, which have covered such subjects in the past as Africa, the cosmic universe, the Brussels World Fair throughout the years in miniature, and the importance of water.
The Atomium is easily accessible by car, bus, metro, and train. For visitors travelling by car, there are numerous free parking lots within walking distance of the Atomium. Bus lines run directly from the centre of Brussels to the Atomium and guests receive discounted admission to the Atomium when they present their City Sightseeing Brussels bus tickets at the door. To travel by train, visitors can take the B-Excursion, which offers transport straight to the Atomium entrance. Metro travellers should take line 6 and get off at the Heysel/Heizel stop, which is a five-minute walk from the Atomium.
