Vienna’s extravagant theatricality is a symbol of Austria’s world-renowned splendour. Built in 1898, Volksoper is the only performance hall to dedicate itself primarily to operettas. Audiences can also indulge in Volksoper’s operas, musicals, and ballets. With 300 performances staged each year, Vienna’s Volksoper has something to offer almost every day, with classical performances from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Guests with contemporary avant-garde tastes will be delighted to experience Volksoper’s cabaret and burlesque. To commemorate the unforgettable performances, CDs and DVDs may be purchased at the Volksoper Box Office Shop.
- Experience Vienna’s celebrated Volksoper operetta scene, with extraordinary performances of Leo Fall’s identity-shifting Madame Pompadour and the lively, romantic scene of Ein Waltzertraum by Oscar Strauss.
- Succumb to Volksoper’s sublime opera, whether it is Verdi’s tragic Parisian romance of Violetta in La Traviata, Bizet’s dramatic and fiery tale of the gypsy Carmen, or Puccini’s enthralling and heart-rending Tosca set in papal Rome.
- Be captivated at one of Volksoper’s mesmerising ballet performances in the heart of Vienna, like the tragedy of human struggle against fate in Carmina Burana.
Book a flight to Vienna International Airport. The airport is connected to the city through the metro railway known as S-Bahn. City Airport Train will get you into Vienna’s core faster, but will cost a little more. Once you’re downtown, to get to Volksoper you can take bus route 221 which goes along a main street called Währinger Gürtel. Get off at Währinger Strasse-Volksoper station, and you’ll be just around the corner. You can hire a taxi from anywhere in Vienna, and on your way back from the Volksoper, you’ll find the Währinger Gürtel taxi station just outside the theatre.
