With its name derived from one of the most breathtaking structures in all of Italy known as Stephansdom, or St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the charming square of Stephansplatz is a cultural commons and local hotspot in Vienna located right at the city’s busting centre. A genuine gem of this world-renowned Italian city, Stephansplatz famously provides thousands of returning holidaymakers year after year with unbeatable views of the area’s namesake church, which stands as one of the world’s tallest—an immaculate structure no visitor to this historic area can miss. Also admirable from amongst this capital city’s bustling public space is the stunning Peterskirche, or St. Peter’s Church, indisputably Vienna’s most ornately decorated Baroque structure.
- Visit Stephansdom Cathedral to admire, along with the structure’s incredible architectural achievements, the High Altar’s gothic-inspired stone pulpit.
- Explore the Haas-Haus, a massive steel-glass structure located just across the street from St. Stephen’s, and marvel at how these two distinct architectural styles mirror Stephansplatz’s uncanny blend of ancient and modern art.
- Shop for inimitable souvenirs along Graben or Karntner Strass streets, two of Vienna’s best-known shopping thoroughfares intersecting at Stephanplatz.
Stephansplatz can be accessed quickly via public transport from the Vienna International Airport. The City Airport Train provides transit to the city centre every 30 minutes, a ride that takes approximately 15 minutes. Rates are 11 euros for one-way and 17 euros for two-way, with discounts for Vienna cardholders. Buses operated by Vienna Airport Lines leave every 30 minutes and reach the centre in approximately 20 minutes. Providing even faster transit, taxis and rental cars are also abundantly available in the area. As many of Stephansplatz’s attractions are located within close walking distance of one another, any locals and holidaymakers to the area prefer travelling on foot.
