The church of Stephansdom, officially called St. Stephen’s Cathedral, is one of the most significant religious sites in the city of Vienna. While the cathedral was officially dedicated in the mid1400s, it was actually built over the course of several hundred years on the site of two previous churches. Even though the site was originally established during the Middle Ages, it is still being used for weekday and Sunday services today. Owing to its relevance in Viennese history, Stephansdom has also appeared in famous films, including “The Third Man,” which starred Orson Welles.
- See the Alter Steffl tower, nicknamed “Old Steve,” a Gothic stone structure that you can climb to get a view of Vienna from inside the Stephansdom cathedral.
- Visit the tomb of Frederick III, a Viennese emperor from the 17th century, where you’ll see intricate carvings of gargoyles along the sides of the burial chamber.
- Get a look at the Pummerin bell located inside the Stephansom, which is ceremoniously rung in Vienna every New Year’s Eve.
The local airport is Vienna International Airport, which is located just outside the city and offers service from several cities around the world. Since the terminal is a few kilometres away from the city centre, visitors will need to arrange for their own travel to the city. The S-Bahn train system travels from the airport to the city via the S7 line. Getting to Stephansdom on the city’s public transportation system is easy, since buses 1A, 2A, and 3A offer direct service. The U-Bahn underground system provides transport to Stephansdom via the Stephansplatz station.
