St. Stephen's Cathedral
Between 1137, when it was founded, and 1511, when major construction work ended, St. Stephen’s Cathedral has seen tragedy and triumph, royalty and the religious, and repair and restoration work that continue until today. This ancient cathedral, an iconic symbol of Austria, stands in the famous Stephansplatz square in the heart of Vienna, and remains one of the most conspicuous landmarks of the city’s skyline. With its alluring combination of rich Romanesque and Gothic architecture, imposing size, exquisite altars, multiple bells, ancient chapels and crypts, and extraordinarily colourful history, St. Stephen’s Cathedral is a must-see on every holiday to Vienna.
- Marvel at the massive 16th century bell nicknamed “Boomer,” which hangs in the north tower of Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral; its 20,130 kilograms weight and 3.14 metre diameter makes it Europe’s second largest but Austria’s largest.
- See the famed Stone Pulpit, a masterpiece in Gothic sculpture, featuring stylized protruding petals, embellished pillar and spiral stairway, and self-portrait in stone of the pulpit’s unknown sculptor.
- Check the 14 niched sides of St. Katherine’s Chapel baptismal font, located in the south tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, which features Christ, St. Stephen, and the 12 apostles.
Getting to St. Stephen’s Cathedral by car, taxi, or foot is rather easy as it is located in the famous Stephansplatz square in the centre of Vienna, an important hub for two U-Bahn metro lines. Additionally, there are three bus routes with stops at or near Stephansplatz. Alternatively, you can board any of the sightseeing buses which connect the square. These buses are run by different companies, and can be identified by their conspicuous colours. Other public transportation options to get within walking distance of the cathedral include City Airport Trains (CAT) and the S-Bahn metro from the airport.
