Simmering is the 11th district of Vienna, Austria. It dates back to at least the year 1028. In 1605, a brewery was begun in the town, which was its best-known feature for the next 300 years. Simmering has been an important transport route, particularly to the south and east, for a long time, and one of its high streets was actually a Roman road. Today the district is known for hosting municipal infrastructure, such as a city recycling centre, and for its industries. It is also well known for being the home of the imaginative Gasometer urban complex.
- Visit one of the most unusual urban renewal projects in Vienna or anywhere, Simmering’s Gasometers, which are four large, red-brick cylinders that used to hold gas but now contain housing, a music hall, theatre, and more.
- Tour the Zentralfriedhof, or Vienna’s Central Cemetery, where you can see the graves of Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, and other iconic figures.
- Stroll through Simmering’s Herderpark, which is comprised of 43,000 square metres of park, with a basketball court, table tennis tables, and a swimming pool.
Vienna’s international airport, (airport code VIE), accommodates flights from many international cities. It is also accessible by Austrian train or by regional buses. Getting around within Vienna is best accomplished by taking advantage of its excellent public transportation system. There is an S-Bahn, or commuter train, that connects its districts. Travellers can use its trains, trams, buses and underground, which are well integrated. You can visit most of Simmering’s attractions via this system. Or, for those who prefer getting around even faster, there is a good taxicab network available for your convenience.
